Keefer & Khan to Join PHAN to Release New Report on Hospital Price Transparency in Pennsylvania, Discuss Bipartisan Legislation Aimed at Strengthening Compliance

New Report Takes Detailed Look at Hospital Compliance with Federal Price Transparency Regulations

HARRISBURG – On Tuesday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m., Senator Dawn Keefer (R-31) and Rep. Tarik Khan (D-194) will join Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN) to release a new report that takes a detailed look at whether Pennsylvania hospitals are fully compliant with federal rules that require them to disclose prices to patients in advance of receiving care.

Without knowing the price of a procedure, test or stay, patients can’t make informed decisions about their care. With the rise of high-deductible health plans the need for price transparency is only growing. Since 2021, all hospitals have been required by the federal government to post clear, detailed information about the prices they charge each insurer for all healthcare services, along with patient-friendly information about the cost of common procedures. There is currently no penalty for hospitals that do not comply.

On the call state lawmakers will also discuss proposed bipartisan legislation, HB 1469/SB 752, currently being considered by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, that will strengthen price transparency requirements, make data easier to use for patients and require hospitals to disclose and report on facility fees, hidden fees often not covered by insurance. States including Indiana, Virginia, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado and Texas have already enacted similar measures.
