Dillsburg Bell Celebrates York County History

I recently joined local officials and community members in Dillsburg for the dedication of “Dusk on the Farm,” a commemorative bell celebrating York County’s history and heritage as part of America250PA’s “Bells Across PA” project.

Painted by York County artist Annelise Vuono, the bell reflects the nostalgia of growing up in farm country. It is one of seven hand-painted replica Liberty Bells being permanently displayed throughout York County, with each design highlighting a unique part of our community’s history and cultural heritage.

“Dusk on the Farm” is now on display outside the Dillsburg Borough Office at 233 S. Chestnut St. I encourage residents to stop by and see this unique piece of local art as we celebrate America’s 250^th anniversary.

Touring LKQ’s Operations

I recently toured LKQ Corporation’s facility to learn more about its operations and the important role it plays in the automotive repair industry and our local economy. LKQ is the nation’s largest provider of aftermarket and recycled collision replacement parts, as well as refurbished products such as wheels, bumper covers and lights. The company also provides mechanical replacement parts, including remanufactured engines and transmissions.

LKQ employs more than 600 Pennsylvanians, including many in the 31^st District, with a warehouse and distribution center in York County. I appreciate the opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about this important local employer.

Honoring Those Who Serve at Mechanicsburg High School

Friday night football took on an even greater meaning as the Mechanicsburg Wildcats faced the Lower Dauphin Falcons during Mechanicsburg High School’s Salute to Service Week. I was excited to join the Wildcat community as students, families and neighbors came together to recognize those who have dedicated themselves to serving others.

The evening was a special opportunity to honor our military service members, veterans and first responders and to recognize the sacrifices they and their families make on behalf of our country and community. Seeing the community come together to show its appreciation was a great reminder of the strong spirit of service that exists right here in Mechanicsburg.

Join Us for a Concealed Carry Seminar Oct. 17

I invite area gun owners to join Rep. George Margetas for a Concealed Carry Seminar on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at the West Manchester Farmers and Sportsman’s Association, 4900 Pine Hill Road, Dover.

Attorney Seth Springer will discuss the rights of gun owners and provide information about concealed carry. Northern York County Regional Police Department Detective Jonathan Bailey, a firearms instructor, also will be on hand to share his expertise and answer questions. My staff will be available to provide information about state services and resources.

Bringing the School Property Tax Conversation to Our Communities

Last week, I had the opportunity to hold two School Property Tax Elimination Town Halls — one in New Cumberland and another in Hopwood. These discussions gave residents an opportunity to learn more about my School Property Tax Elimination Act, ask questions and share their thoughts about how we can provide meaningful property tax relief to Pennsylvania homeowners.

Key Measure to Prevent Eminent Domain Abuse Still Awaits House Action 

Property owners scored a key victory this legislative session when the Senate approved a measure to protect and financially compensate them if targeted by eminent domain abuse. However, the bill has languished in the House of Representatives for more than a year.  

Senate Bill 225 would ensure business owners and farmers whose properties are seized through eminent domain are compensated for loss of “goodwill,” which goes beyond the assessed value. For farms, the land may possess characteristics that make it particularly special, such as fertile soil. In the case of another business, goodwill may be the location, access to utilities and other factors. 

This bill received unanimous support in the Senate and there’s no reason for the House not to act. Read more about this bill and federal efforts to end eminent domain abuse here.

Homeland Security Grant Webinar Oct. 15

When a crisis strikes, faith-based communities are often among the first places people turn for help, hope and support.

Houses of worship, nonprofits, schools and community organizations can learn how to play a vital role before, during and after a crisis via a free Pennsylvania Department of Homeland Security webinar Oct. 15.

Participants will gain practical tools and resources to help their organization respond with compassion, coordination and confidence. Learn more at the webinar registration page.
