Supporting Recovery and Veteran Services in Lemoyne

Senator Dawn Keefer and the leaders of Beating the Odds stand in front of the organization’s new sign with a parking lot and road in the background.

I appreciated the opportunity to be part of the open house and dedication for Beating the Odds, a new recovery and veterans services center in Lemoyne.

The center provides important resources for individuals who may be struggling, including support groups, activities, a free clothing closet and a safe, welcoming environment for those in need. It was encouraging to see the center’s commitment to strengthening the community and helping individuals on their path to recovery, stability and hope.

Focusing on Quality of Life in York County

Senator Dawn Keefer and other York County leaders stand in an open room in front of a York County Economic Alliance banner.

I participated in a legislative luncheon and panel discussion hosted by the York County Economic Alliance focusing on the issues most affecting quality of life across York County.

The discussion examined how housing, transportation and recreation shape strong communities and impact residents’ daily lives. Panelists also addressed outdoor recreation, childcare, infrastructure and legislative priorities in Harrisburg, while attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation about York County’s future.

Join Me at the Next School Property Tax Elimination Town Hall

I will be hosting an upcoming School Property Tax Elimination Town Hall with Rep. Tom Jones and Rep. Wendy Fink on Wednesday, May 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Elizabethtown High School, located at 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Individuals planning to attend may RSVP to Rep. Tom Jones.

This event will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the School Property Tax Elimination Act, ask questions, and participate in a discussion focused on achieving meaningful property tax relief for Pennsylvania families.

Free Motorcycle Safety Training Available

Pennsylvania riders can take advantage of free motorcycle safety training through the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP). The program offers courses for beginner, intermediate and experienced riders at training sites across the commonwealth. Classes operating under PAMSP are free to Pennsylvania Class M permit and motorcycle license holders, providing riders with an opportunity to strengthen their skills and improve roadway safety.

Successful completion of a PAMSP basic or intermediate course waives the requirement to take a motorcycle skills test at a PennDOT Driver License Center and automatically earns permit holders their motorcycle license.

Senate Acts to Tighten Safety Standards for Operating Big Rigs

The Senate approved two bills to tighten commercial driver’s license (CDL) safety standards and close dangerous loopholes in Pennsylvania’s licensing and training systems.

Senate Bill 1294 improves the training curriculum and strengthens penalties to shut down unqualified “CDL Mills.” Senate Bill 1295 requires English proficiency in all testing applications to operate an 80,000-pound commercial vehicle on public highways.

The legislation was developed after a Senate hearing exposed alarming gaps in current laws, including instances where individuals without proper training or English proficiency have operated heavy commercial vehicles on U.S. highways. The bills were sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. Read more about these CDL improvement bills here

New Medical and Health Professional Loans Support Graduate Students

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency has launched a new Medical and Health Professional Loan Program to support graduate students in medical, dental, veterinarian and health professional studies.

The program features deferred repayment during residency, fellowship, internship, research and other clinical training, and the potential for reduced reliance on co-signers. This initiative helps fill critical, specialized positions to serve citizens across the commonwealth.

Medical students can apply here. Other health-related students can apply here.

Students pursuing advanced degrees in other areas of study can apply here.
