Happy Mother’s Day

The text “Happy Mother’s Day” appears on a pink background with pink and white flowers in the corners.

On Mother’s Day, we take time to honor the love, strength and dedication of mothers across our communities. I recognize that parenting today comes with unique challenges, and raising children has never been more demanding.

As your state senator, I remain committed to protecting the ability of parents to make the decisions that best serve their children and families. Thank you for everything you do each and every day. Happy Mother’s Day!

New Satellite Office Opening in Cumberland County

An exterior shot of a stone and brick building with a sign reading “Administration” arched over the entrance.

To increase access to state services for residents of the 31st District, I am pleased to announce the opening of a new satellite office in Cumberland County on May 14 at the Lower Allen Township Municipal Services Center, 2233 Gettysburg Rd., Camp Hill. The office will be open on the second Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stop by for assistance with property tax/rent rebates, PennDOT paperwork, birth or death certificates, veteran assistance and other state-related services. My office is committed to delivering timely and accessible support closer to home.

Strong Community Engagement at School Property Tax Elimination Town Hall

Three pictures. The 1st is Reps. Wendy Fink and Joe D’Orsie and Sen. Dawn Keefer standing. The 2nd is them in front of a crowd. The 3rd is the crowd.

Rep. Wendy Fink and I recently held another town hall on school property tax elimination, hosted by Rep. Joe D’Orsie in East Manchester. The event brought together residents from across the community for an informative discussion on our School Property Tax Elimination Act and its impact on Pennsylvanians.

Attendees asked thoughtful questions and shared valuable perspectives, leading to meaningful conversations throughout the evening. We appreciate everyone who participated and helped make the event a productive opportunity for community engagement and feedback.

Local Manufacturers Provide Firsthand Insight on Industry Needs

Two pictures. The first features Senator Dawn Keefer and 18 others standing in an open room. The second features seven people sitting at two tables.

I recently joined fellow legislators at a manufacturers roundtable hosted by Rep. Joe D’Orsie, where we met with business leaders from across our districts. The discussion provided an opportunity to hear directly from those who are building, innovating and driving the manufacturing industry forward in York County.

Hearing directly from industry leaders helps ensure policymakers understand the real-world impacts of decisions on employers and workers. Their experience and perspective are critical as we work to support continued growth and strengthen the local economy.

I am grateful to all who participated and took the time to share their expertise. Their engagement is invaluable as we work to support a strong and competitive manufacturing sector in the region.

Students Explore Electrical Careers at ABC Keystone IEC Career Day

A collage of photos from IEC career day featuring Senator Dawn Keefer, Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill and students.

I recently attended the ABC Keystone Independent Electrical Contractors Career Day event at Gettle Inc. in Emigsville, where students had the opportunity to explore hands-on electrical training and learn more about careers in the electrical trade. The event featured interactive demonstrations, including wire boards, tool use and conduit bending, giving students a real-world look at the skills used in the field.

It was encouraging to see students engaged and interested in this career. Events like this highlight how the skilled trades can offer rewarding, long-term and sustainable career opportunities for the next generation of workers.

Dover Area FFA Banquet Recognizes Student Achievement

Six FFA students stand in front of a blue background covered in FFA medals.

I recently attended the Dover Area FFA Chapter banquet to congratulate students and recognize their hard work, dedication and accomplishments throughout the year in agricultural education and leadership development.

Congratulations to all and thank you to the Dover Area FFA Chapter for continuing to invest in the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Measures Reinforcing Commercial Vehicle Safety Approved by Committee

A package of bills to improve safety standards for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders in Pennsylvania was approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The measures are the result of a committee fact-finding hearing in December, which revealed deficiencies and loopholes involving criminal illegal migrants. The hearing was prompted by a fatal crash in the state of Indiana involving a Pennsylvania-issued, non-domiciled CDL held by a citizen of Kyrgyzstan.

The package includes the following bills:

  • Senate Bill 1294 improves the training curriculum and strengthens penalties to shutdown unqualified “CDL Mills.”
  • Senate Bill 1295 requires English proficiency in all testing applications to operate an 80,000-pound commercial vehicle on public highways.
  • Senate Bill 1296 establishes new penalties for out-of-service violations issued to unsafe CDL drivers, including the operation of a heavy commercial vehicle on public highways without English comprehension.

The bills now go to the full Senate for consideration.

Hearing on Resource Adequacy, Energy Market, Barriers to New PA Power Generation

Continuing efforts to ensure Pennsylvania families and employers have access to reliable, affordable electricity, the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee held a public hearing to examine the latest energy market conditions and barriers to new power generation in the commonwealth.

The panel heard from testifiers representing the regional power grid, PJM, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and others. ReliabilityFirst, which is responsible for ensuring the dependability and security of the regional bulk power system, projected risk to grid reliability could come in 2029 instead of in the early 2030s as previously projected.

The surge of demand from data centers and the need for more skilled infrastructure workers were also discussed. You can view written testimony and the hearing video here.
