In this Update:
Prayers for York County’s Fallen and Injured OfficersI am profoundly saddened by the tragic events in Spring Grove, York County, where three officers, Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, lost their lives in the line of duty and two others were seriously injured. I am grateful to the Pennsylvania State Police, local police departments, EMS crews and all first responders for their swift and coordinated response to protect residents and restore safety. As we mourn the loss of these brave officers, I pray for comfort and strength for the families, the officers recovering from injuries and the entire Northern York County Regional Police Department and York County Sheriff’s Office. May God watch over them and bring peace to all affected by this tragedy. For those who wish to help, you can make a donation to support the officers’ families and our law enforcement community during this difficult time by clicking here. Watch My PCN Interview to Learn About School Property Tax EliminationI recently joined Pennsylvania Cable Network’s On the Issues to discuss my bill to eliminate school property taxes in Pennsylvania. The current property tax system is unfair. It drives up costs for homeowners, puts seniors at risk of losing their homes over unpaid tax bills and makes homeownership unattainable for many families. My plan replaces school property taxes with a fairer, more stable revenue model while maintaining strong funding for schools. Watch the full interview to gain a deeper understanding of the legislation and hear answers to many common questions about the bill. You also can view the schedule of upcoming town halls, see how your taxes would change and read more about this legislation here. Senate Votes to Help Relieve Long-Term Care Worker ShortageThe number of Pennsylvania residents ages 65 and over is expected to nearly double by 2040, but even now many nursing facilities are forced to take beds out of service because they can’t fill direct care positions. The Senate recently passed legislation to tackle this critical problem by making it easier for those seeking employment at long-term care centers while still ensuring employees are well-qualified. Senate Bill 114 would encourage more employees to join the long-term care workforce by expanding the availability of training courses for nurse aides and the eligibility for individuals to take the nurse aide competency exam. The bill was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. Fire and EMS Funding Assistance AvailableOur local fire and EMS companies are committed to saving lives and protecting property, so I’m pleased to announce they can apply now for assistance through the state Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grants program. The funding is available to volunteer or career fire, rescue and EMS organizations and can be used for facility improvements, equipment purchase and repair, debt reduction, training and certification, and more. The deadline to apply is Oct. 20. More information, important dates and the online application can be found here.
