In this Update:
Semiquincentennial Bell Unveiled at Camp SecurityOn July 9, I joined colleagues and community members for the dedication and unveiling of the Semiquincentennial Bell at Camp Security in York County. This historic site is one of the last undeveloped Revolutionary War prison camps in the United States and serves as a meaningful location for this commemorative event. The bell is part of America250PA’s initiative to install 67 bronze replica Liberty Bells across Pennsylvania—one in each county. These permanent installations recognize sites that reflect the resilience, unity and legacy of early Pennsylvanians as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026. The Camp Security bell honors York County’s important place in our country’s founding and serves as a lasting tribute to the region’s historical significance. Touring Tec Centro York: A Community Asset for Workforce DevelopmentCongratulations to Tec Centro York and the Tec Centro Workforce Network on the opening of their newly renovated workforce development center at 800 E. Market Street in York. It was insightful to tour the facility and learn how this community resource is expanding access to essential job training, education and career development services for York residents. The center’s updated classrooms and hands-on programs will play a vital role in preparing our local workforce for today’s job market and supporting long-term economic growth across the region. Thank you to the staff and students for sharing your time and insights. A Great Night at the York State Fair Opening CeremonyI had a wonderful time attending the opening ceremony at the York State Fair, one of the highlights of summer here in York County. This annual event always brings out the best in our community and this year was no exception. During the opening ceremony, I presented a Pennsylvania Senate citation to the York County Agricultural Society in honor of the 260th anniversary of the York State Fair, America’s first fair. I also had the pleasure of watching the crowning of the 2025 York State Fair Queen. Congratulations to Kennady Laird! I wish you all the best for a successful year ahead. It was a great to connect with residents and take in the traditions that make the York State Fair such a special event. From agricultural displays to family-friendly activities, the fair truly offers something for everyone. State Budget UpdateThe Senate convened for session in Harrisburg this week as work on the 2025-26 state budget progresses. Our discussions with the House of Representatives and the governor continue to advance. Senate Republicans remain committed to a final agreement which will help to address the structural deficit facing our commonwealth and put Pennsylvania on a solid path for future years. Legislation to Address Pennsylvania’s Shortage of CPAs Signed into LawA Senate measure aimed at alleviating the growing shortage of certified public accountants (CPAs) in Pennsylvania has been signed into law, to ensure the commonwealth has enough of these professionals so critical to the everyday economy. Senate Bill 719, now Act 27 of 2025, provides an alternative pathway to CPA licensure by allowing candidates to qualify with 120 credit hours of education and two years of professional experience, rather than the current 150-credit-hour requirement and one year of experience. Candidates must still pass the CPA exam to be licensed. The new pathway is designed to reduce financial and time burdens on aspiring accountants without compromising professional standards. The law also streamlines the process for qualified out-of-state accountants to practice in Pennsylvania without obtaining a separate state certificate or permit.
