In this Update:
Engaging with York City Leaders to Tackle Community ChallengesLast week, I had the opportunity to meet with York City Mayor Michael Helfrich and members of city council to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue about the needs of York City. Our conversation focused on the real challenges city residents are facing from public safety and infrastructure to economic opportunity and quality of life, and how we can work together to address them. Collaboration is essential to building a stronger York and I’m committed to continuing this partnership with local leaders to support the people we serve. Watch Live: Hold the PA Budget Line at $47.9 News ConferenceOn Wednesday, June 4, at 9 a.m., watch live the PA Budget: Hold The Line At $47.9 news conference where I will be joined by my legislative colleagues and advocates calling for a sustainable and fiscally responsible budget. We will highlight the importance of budgetary restraint and the concerns that not only I, but others have expressed regarding Gov. Shapiro’s proposed budget. Together, we will call for prioritizing essential services while avoiding unsustainable spending increases that will lead to additional taxes on hard working Pennsylvanians in the years ahead. We must hold the line at $47.9 billion! Relocation of Historic Williams Grove Amusement Park CarouselThe Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association held a formal blessing for the historic Carousel House in preparation of its relocation from the former Williams Grove Amusement Park to the association’s grounds. The event marked a significant step in the preservation of the structure, which stands as one of the last remaining elements of the once-thriving amusement park. The blessing signified the beginning of a new chapter for the Carousel House, which will serve as a prominent feature of the association’s grounds and used for entertainment and events, continuing its legacy as a gathering place for the community. Bill to Increase Firefighters in PA Receives Senate SupportPennsylvania relies on volunteer firefighters, but their numbers are dropping – from 300,000 in the 1970s to fewer than 38,000 today. To help ensure there are enough firefighters to respond to a crisis, the Senate passed a bill that would reform the process for people earning their firefighter certification. Senate Bill 90 would maintain the high standards to become a firefighter while making it less intimidating for men and women who are interested in serving their communities as volunteer firefighters. Currently, firefighter applicants must complete four training modules totaling 188 hours. They then must pass a cumulative test covering all four modules. The bill would allow them to be tested following each of the four modules. Senate Bill 90 heads to the House of Representatives for further consideration. D-Day: A Turning Point in HistoryD-Day, June 6, 1944, stands as one of the most pivotal moments in modern history: a day that marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. It was on this day that more than 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France which led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control. D-Day is not only a tribute to those who fought and died, but a reminder of what can be achieved when nations unite against tyranny. The legacy of D-Day lives on in the freedoms we enjoy today thanks to the bravery, resilience and resolve of a generation that changed the course of history. |
