Bill Ensuring Sportsmen’s Rights are Protected Receives Senate SupportLegislation to protect sportsmen’s rights by aligning state law with the federal and state constitution passed the Senate and is headed to the House of Representatives for consideration. The Pennsylvania Game Code contains sections indicating it is unlawful to refuse to answer questions from representatives of the Game Commission. However, that violates the United States and Pennsylvania constitutions, which ensure no person may be “compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself” and “he cannot be compelled to give evidence against himself.” Senate Bill 518 would remove the offending sections, ensuring the protection of sportsmen’s constitutional rights. Local Government Committee Kicks Off New SessionAs chair of the PA Senate Local Government Committee, I’m pleased to share that we’ve officially held our first meeting of the legislative session and we hit the ground running. The committee approved Senate Bill 311 aimed at protecting your ability to choose how you heat your home and power your appliances. This bill ensures local governments cannot restrict or ban specific energy sources, helping keep utility options open for Pennsylvania families and businesses. Fiscal Cliff Ahead — Hold the Line on the PA BudgetPA State Treasurer Stacy Garrity has sounded the alarm about unsustainable spending trends and the need to preserve our Rainy Day Fund (savings account). In her warning, she made it clear: unless we act responsibly now, Pennsylvania could face severe financial strain in just a few years. But it’s not just about avoiding disaster. Holding the line also means respecting taxpayers, prioritizing core government services and avoiding new burdens on families and small businesses. I remain firmly committed to holding the PA budget line at $47.9 billion to protect hardworking Pennsylvania taxpayers from the looming fiscal cliff our commonwealth faces. Cumberland County Law Enforcement Memorial CeremonyOn May 16, I attended the Cumberland County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony, a tribute to the 13 officers who gave their lives in service to our community. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the courage, dedication and sacrifice that our law enforcement makes every day. Following the memorial, I had the opportunity to tour the county’s 911 center and witness firsthand the essential work that supports our public safety. As we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, it’s equally important to recognize and support the brave men and women who continue to wear the badge and protect our communities. Thank you to all who have served, both past and present! Holding History: The Aitken Bible and the Spirit of American FreedomI feel truly blessed to hold a powerful piece of our nation’s history in my hands: a personal reproduction of the First American Bible, known as the Aitken Bible, complete with my name engraved on the cover. This isn’t just any Bible. Printed in 1782 during the American Revolution, the Aitken Bible is the only Bible ever authorized by an official act of Congress. At a time when the British Crown forbade the printing of English-language Bibles in the American colonies, this bold publication represented far more than access to Scripture — it embodied the fight for freedom of religion, freedom of thought and freedom of the press. This Bible stands as a timeless symbol of the courage and conviction that defined our nation’s founding. I’m grateful to have this tangible reminder of our spiritual and national heritage and of the enduring values that continue to guide us today. To learn more about the Aitken Bible, visit the Library of Congress: Bible of the Revolution. Big 33 Football Classic Returns This SundayJoin me at the 68th Big 33 Football Classic, kicking off this Sunday, May 25, at 12:30 p.m. at Cumberland Valley High School, 6746 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg. Often called the “Super Bowl of High School Football,” the Big 33 is an all-star matchup featuring the top high school football players from Pennsylvania and Maryland, many of whom go on to play in college and even the NFL. This year’s game promises excitement, talent and fun for the whole family following this game day lineup:
Remembering the Fallen This Memorial DayThis Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy will never be forgotten. May we carry forward their memory with gratitude in our hearts and may we always strive to be worthy of their sacrifice. Wishing you a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.
